Most people still live with the belief that blood cancer is not a curable disease. But at this 21st centaury even blood cancer can be cured. Like we donate blood, blood stem cells can also be donated. Not only does it cure blood cancer but it is also a key factor in curing several blood related disorders. But still this remains unknown to the wide public. To put light to this social cause, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Units 129,517 and 641 of SNM Institute of Management and Technology, Ernakulam organised a blood stem cell awareness class on 7th October 2017 at their college campus.
The class was conducted by Mr Aby Sam John representing 'DATRI' where their core focus was on Stem cell donation and spreading the awareness of this cause. In a short span of time of 30 minutes he addressed a huge crowd of nearly 200 NSS volunteers and inspired them on this topic. At the end of his class, he managed to get 66 students to be a part of this cause.
As a first stage of donating stem cells the volunteers filled up a registration form stating all their details and agreeing to the procedures related to it. Along with it they bagged samples of their cheek cells on either cheek, which were bar-coded for later use. Furthermore they were given a donor card with their names on it.
There might be only one out of 10,000 chances to find a match, but with these volunteers efforts it might be the reason for saving someone's life in the future.
