A senior US administration official has said President Donald Trump will recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and instruct the State Department to begin the multi-year process of moving the American embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.
Official said the landmark announcement would be made tonight from the White House. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official also said, Mr. Trump will order planning to begin on moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. However, the officials said it will take some time and a matter of some years.
Earlier, President Trump held discussions with Israeli and Arab leaders, ahead of his plans to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The White House said, they discussed potential decisions regarding Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the EU, France, Germany and Turkey all warned Trump against the move. Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud said the relocation of the embassy or recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital would constitute a flagrant provocation of Muslims, all over the world.
Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas warned of the dangerous consequences that moving the embassy would have for peace efforts and regional stability. Jordan, Egypt, France, the European Union and the Arab League have also expressed concern.
The status of Jerusalem is a central issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with both sides claiming the city as their capital. Most of the international community does not formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The city is home to key religious sites sacred to Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
