Alappuzha could overcome the difficultly by introducing its own waste management system and it has proved to be a model for the whole nation that now the city is one among the top five in the UN Clean City List.
Alappuzha, a coastal city with large network of waterways and watershed areas is famous for coir industry, fishing, fish processing and paddy cultivation. As the city is thickly populated waste management became a real challenge.Decades back the city was notorious for diseases caused by lack of cleanliness such as filaria, leprosy etc. But as a result of proper waste management, the city could overcome the difficulty.
AEROBIC BIN is the new method of waste management introduced in Alappuzha. A number of aerobic bins are installed in various parts of the city. Solid waste are put in to the bin where it is converted in to fertile compost which is used as manure for farming.
Households in the city are using bio gas plants where waste from kitchen is main input as a result they can save the expense of cooking gas and can easily remove waste. In addition to these the slurry from the plant is best for vegetable cultivation. Pipe compost system also is common in Alappuzha.
With the simultaneous implementation of all these waste management systems, the city has almost achieved the target of zero waste.
