  • MANGALDAI :: Darrang Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarmah has observed that no of child adoption cases through CARA is relatively less since the illegal practice of adoption from the hospitals without the knowledge of the authorities or through different networks are still going . It’s very important that such illegal adoption practices are stopped to enhance the no of babies for legal adoption under CARA where the rights of a child for care and social security is protected. He was addressing the public function in connection with the international adoption month as the chief guest here at the district library auditorium on November 30. Deputy Commissioner Sarmah stressed the need of strong legal action in any illegal practices surrounding children in need care and protection.

    ‘ I have asked the Superintendent of Police for strong legal action in cases where child rights have been seriously violated. The violators are to be arrested and put behind the bars.” He also mooted for boosting such child centric legal issues from the ground level for a better future of all children in the district. Meanwhile speaking on the occasion as the resource person Lutfur Zaman, Assistant Professor, Mangaldai Law College underlined about the recent amendments in the adoption regulations under the JJ Act including shifting the power of adoption order from the judiciary to executive to complete the process in a lesser time.

    Additional Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Nirmal Kumar Beria, Chief Functionary of Specialized Adoption Agency ( SAA) ,Mayukh Goswami and representatives from the Darrang Police and the Labour department also spoke on the occasion. The objectives of the meeting presided over by Dr Budhin Ch Hazarika, Chairman, District Child Welfare Committee was earlier explained by Additional Deputy Commissioner in charge of the Women and Child Development Department Pallavi Kachary.

    The meeting which ended with the vote of thanks being offered by Kanaklata Baruah, PO ( NIC ) began with the lightening of the lamp by Deputy Commissioner followed by welcome speech by DCPO ( i/c) Manjeet Das. Adoptive parents and prospective adoptive parents present were feted on the occasion where a short video on the reaction of the adoptive parents and children associated with the district was also displayed to mark the celebration.
