5Mumbai :No one would like their children to live in unhygienic and filthy environment. But in Kurla,ThakkarBappaColony peopleare living poor unhygienic conditions with no proper sanitation facilities. Improper disposal of waste and drainage facilities has made this area breeding ground for life-threatening diseases. In order to end the hygiene related problems in the area, nearly 60 doctors associated with Medscape- India, an Aryan Medical and Educational Trust initiated a walkathon. 1000 school kids & more than 60 doctors participated.

The occasion was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Mayor of Mumbai, Mrs. SnehalAmbekar. MedScapeIndia organized ‘Walkathon’ also witnessed participation of celebrities like Mantra, J Brabdon Hill AbhayShuklaNikhil from Sony TV’s CID show.

DrSunitaDube, a practicing Radiologist and chairperson of MedcapeIndia Says “Named as ‘AnokheePahal’, MedScapeIndia believes that the walkathon is an attempt to spread the message of ‘togetherness towards better sanitation and hygiene’.MedScapeIndia organized walkathon was supported by schools students, doctors, residents of nearby localities and people from different walks of life. The doctors associated with Medscapeindia played a pivotal role as they showed their responsibility with regards to promoting sanitation and hygiene in the vicinity and developing proper waste disposal and management systems. These doctors also interacted with the residents of ThakkarBappa Colony on different ways to stay healthy. They also distributed material related to proper healthcare and medical aid and completed the walk with great enthusiasm”.

Playing the pivotal role in the entire campaign, DrSunitaDube, said, “AnokheePahal is an outcome of a lot of research and efforts initiated by our team and we are indeed pleased to kickstart this campaign with the ‘Walkathon’ . A detailed survey in the ThakkarBappa locality made us conclude that the residents here face poor living conditions and are more prone to major diseases like Tuberculosis, Inflammation of the Respiratory track, Bronchitis, HIV, Malaria, Dengue, head and eye pains, due to un-safe handling of raw materials and the fumes produced from the shoe manufacturing units.”

“The health camp and walkathon will help us to create awareness and provide basic medical assistance to the residents. I have received an overwhelming response from the doctor fraternity and residents from the ThakkarBappa colony, encouraging us to work further. We plan to continue this initiative with regular health check-up and provision to medical insurance to the residents at a nominal cost. Our team has been working tirelessly to ensure an improvement in the health condition and together with the support of all the residents we plan to bring about a change in the environment,” added Dr Dube.

MedScapeIndia will continue to create awareness among the poor community about maintaining proper standards and hygiene in our everyday lives, to inculcate the spirit of cleanliness in our children and educate people from the downtrodden community on the importance of cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene.
