  • 11 Lions,9 Tigers dead in Bannerghatta National Park in 14 months

    11 Lions and Nine Tigers died in Bannerghatta National Park between January 2010 and March 2011. This information was given by Forest Minister C H Vijayshankar during calling attention notice in the Assembly today. N Sampangi from Congress drew the attention of the minister towards regular deaths of lions and tigers in the national park. The minister noted that all the lions that were rehabilitated at the National park were brought from circus companies and were ailing from different terminal diseases. Even three tigers were brought from circus companies. In his reply the minister stated that suitable action has been taken against those responsible for the deaths of these wild cats. He further said that the cause for suspected bacterial infection in some of these animals was the poultry supplied to the wild life park. Vijayshankar said measures are taken to sanitize the vehicles which transport meat to the park. He also stated that cages are also sanitized and its upkeep given higher priority. It is ensured that the animal urine does not stagnate in the cages. He also said that specialty hospitals for animals are being planned in the park premises.
