  • The toll in Maharashtra’s Tiware Dam breach mishap has gone up to 11 while 13 people are still reported to be missing.

    In a major mishap, the wall of Tiware Dam in Chiplun Taluka of Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra breached late Tuesday night, leading to flooding of 7 downstream hamlets in the path of the rivulet.

    Twelve houses were washed away. The region has been experiencing incessant rains for the past 36 hours following which the dam had started overflowing since yesterday noon.

    The Tiware dam has a storage capacity of 20 lakh cubic metre. District administration has released the list of people missing. Civil Administration, police, volunteers and NDRF teams are carrying out rescue operations at the site.

    When contacted, Additional Superintendent of Police, Ratnagiri, Vishal Gaikwad told the news agency that a search operation has been launched by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the state police personnel. Police have moved the villagers to safety. The situation is under control now.

    Meanwhile, State Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called for an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation. He said reasons for the breach will be probed and action would be taken against the guilty expeditiously. The Chief Minister has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
