  • 3 injured in poll violence in Kokrajhar, 77.38 % poll recorded

    Kokrajhar : In a poll related violence in Kokrajhar, three persons were injured at Subashpally in Kokrajhar town this evening around 5 pm.

    The injured were identified as Ratan Basumatary, 22, Dhrubajit Brahma, 29, Kwrwmdao Mushahary, 23. The injured are stated to be ABSU workers which is supporting the UPPL candidates in the Lok Sabha election. The injured were admitted to Rupnath Brahma Civil hospital and undergoing treatment.

    According to ABSU general secretary Lorence Islary, some ABSU workers were travelling in two vehicles when they their vehicles were stropped allegedly by BPF workers and attacked with sharp weapons injuring them seriously. The others managed to flee. The goons also damaged the vehicle they were travelling.

    An FIR has been lodged at Kokrajhar police station. Various organizations including the All Bodo Students Union have condemned the incident and demanded strong action against those involved in the crime.

    Police have already started investigation into the matter. “We have started an investigation into the matter. Legal action will be initiated against the culprits involved, Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh said.

    Meanwhile the polling process in 5 No Kokrajhar (ST) HPC held today along with four other HPCs of the State as part of the third phase poll of the 17th parliamentary election, concluded peacefully. An  overall percentage of 77.38 % was recorded till the filing of this report.

    The high-stake polls held amidst thick security will decide the fate of 9 candidates in 5 No Kokrajhar (ST) HPC where the voters voted for good governance, peace and security among other important issues.

    Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner and Returning officer Partha Pratim Mazumdar polling passed off peacefully  in a free and fair manner in total 2347 polling stations under 5 No Kokrajhar (ST) Lok Sabha constituency.  There was no report of any untoward incident.

    5 No Kokrajhar (ST) Lok Sabha constituency consists of 10 Legislative Assembly segments namely 28- Gossaigaon, 29- Kokrajhar West (ST), 30- Kokrajhar East (ST), 31- Sidli (ST), 33- Bijni, 40- Sorbhog, 41- Bhabanipur, 58- Tamulpur, Barama (ST), and Chapaguri (ST).

    The total number of voters in the constituency is 17,65,411, out of which 900284 are male and 8,65,126 are female voters. The total service voters are 10720 and 2,556 People with Disabilities (PwD) voters.

    Kokrajhar is witnessing a multi-corned contest this time with a total nine candidates in fray. The key candidates are Sabda Ram Rabha of Indian National Congress, Pramila Rani Brahma= Bodoland Peoples Front(BPF), Sitting MP and independent candidate Naba Kr. Sarania and Urkhao Gwra Brahma of United People’s Party (Liberal). The other candidates in fray are Biraj Deka= CPI(M), Rajesh Narzary= Voters’ Party International, Charan Iswary= Purvanchal  Janata Party (Secular), Ranjay Kr. Brahma= Independent, and Prasenjit Kr. Das= Independent.
