  • 30th national road safety week being observed in Haflong

    Haflong : The District Transport office in association with Traffic Police and Haflong Auto Rickshaw Welfare Association has been observing a week long programme on 30th national road safety week since February 4th which will end on February 10th next.

    As a part of the programme Deputy Commissioner Amitabh Rajkhowa flagged off auto rally which was organised in collaboration with the Haflong Auto-rickshaw Welfare association starting from Cultural Institute Hall till the council rotary in Haflong.

    An awareness meeting was conducted by the authority wherein various speakers such as Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner A Rajkhowa, Superintendent of Police Shreejith T, DSP S K Morang and DIPRO Purabi Phonglo spoke on the occasion.

    Briefing about the programme and its objective District Transport Officer Abdul Mazid explained about the methods and necessities of the road safety and how one must understand the use of helmets or seat belts while driving on the road or anywhere.

    Sreejeeth T in his speech told that as per the data maximum number of deaths on road is due to bike accidents comprising 35% of the other vehicle accidents. Although the authority has been encouraging on wearing helmets to the bikers yet it is observed that a very marginable number of people practise this. He also informed that all the officers and constables of police in this district will strictly practice wearing helmet while riding two wheelers so as to encourage the public to follow all traffic rules including wearing helmet.

    Presiding as chairman of the meeting DC Rajkhowa summed up saying that life is too valuable and cannot be risked at any cost. Insisting upon road safety not just during the one week observance programme but everyday he said, “ A person who is on a driver’s seat is immensely responsible for all those seated in the vehicle as well as those on road, therefore he is to take all safety measures while riding and obey traffic rules issued”.

    The secretary of the Haflong Auto-rickshaw Welfare association also spoke and thanked the authority for their cooperation in bringing about disciple on road for the auto drivers and also public who are much organised as compared to earlier days.

    The programme was attended by the officers and staff of the district transport department, traffic personnel, students teachers, members of the auto association and media persons.
