Bengaluru : A 32-year-old patient with end-stage renal disease successfully underwent a kidney transplantation at Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi. The timely availability of a donor kidney was made possible owing to the hospital’s dedicated cadaver donor registry. Patient Ms. Rekha, who is battling Type II Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, and Hypothyroidism, experienced fatigue and breathing difficulties, leading to an urgent admission at Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi. She was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, necessitating immediate dialysis and eventually a kidney transplant. Under the expert guidance of Dr Manjunath S, Senior Consultant – Nephrology and Dr Premkumar, Senior Consultant – Urology, the patient underwent kidney transplant and is recovering well.
On May 5th 2024, Patient Rekha(name changed) underwent renal allograft cadaveric kidney transplantation (a patient who receives a kidney from a deceased donor). She was discharged from the hospital within 5 days. Rekha exemplified resilience and fortitude, qualities that play a crucial part in recovery of any transplant recipient. Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi’s dedicated cadaver donor registry played a pivotal role, facilitating the timely availability of a compatible kidney from a deceased brain-dead donor. The successful kidney transplant involved comprehensive matching of the donor kidney with the patient, ensuring compatibility and minimizing rejection risks.
One of the significant advantages of having an in-house Cadaver Donor Registry is streamlining the process of organ transplantation from cadaver donors to patients within the hospital. With a donor registry in place, the hospital receives one organ from a cadaver donor and can issue it to a recipient registered on the recipient waiting list. This efficient mechanism ensures that organ transplants can be carried out without delays, thus saving lives and providing hope to patients in need. Every year 5,00,000 lives are lost due to the shortage of available organs from donors.
Dr Manjunath S, Senior Consultant – Nephrology, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, said, “The transplantation process involved comprehensive matching of the donor kidney with the patient, ensuring compatibility and minimizing rejection risks. We meticulously assessed various factors to optimize the transplant’s success, including tissue compatibility, blood type matching, and overall health status. Witnessing the successful transplantation of the matched kidney fills us with immense satisfaction and reaffirms our commitment to delivering the highest standards of care to our patients. This marks as the first kidney transplant surgery at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi.”
Dr Premkumar, Senior Consultant – Urology, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, said “Rekha’s response to the transplant has met our expectations. In kidney transplantation, minimizing damage to the donor kidney is absolutely paramount. The quicker and more adeptly the team operates, the better the kidney’s function will be after it’s transplanted into the recipient. In Rekha’s case we hardly took one and a half hour to complete the transplantation process. This was another key factor for the success of this transplantation. The availability of our dedicated cadaver donor registry has played a crucial role in ensuring timely access to suitable organs for transplantation, emphasizing the importance of organ donation in saving lives.”
Mr. Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, added, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire medical team for their exceptional dedication and commitment to patient care. Rekha’s successful kidney transplant exemplifies the epitome of medical excellence and compassion that Fortis Healthcare embodies. This remarkable achievement highlights our hospital’s steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare services and prioritizing the well-being of our patients. We remain devoted to providing outstanding medical care and positively impacting the lives of our patients and their families.”
