6.1 magnitude quake rocks Indonesion province of Aceh; 22 people killed, hundreds injured

At least 22 people have been killed and hundred others injured in a strong earthquake that rocked the Aceh province of Western Indonesia.

The 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck yesterday afternoon at a depth of just 10 kilometers and was centered on the far western tip of Sumatra island in Aceh province.

A National Disaster Mitigation Agency official informed that twelve people were killed in Bener Meriah district and 70 others were injured by a landslide or collapsing buildings in the region.

He added that in neighboring Central Aceh district, 10 people were killed, 140 were injured and about 1,500 houses and buildings were damaged.

The quake also triggered landslides and caused hundreds of people to be evacuated to 10 temporary shelters. Rescuers and other assistance teams have arrived in Bener Meriah. The air force have dispatched a helicopter and a CN-235 aircraft to the region
