  • 64.22% voters exercised their franchise in 1st phase of UP Assembly Poll

    upLucknow: In Uttar Pradesh, polling in the first phase of assembly elections for 73 constituencies spread over 15 districts passed off peacefully yesterday. In total 64.22 per cent voters exercised their franchise bettering 2012 state elections figure by 3%. Chief Electoral Officer UP, T Venkatesh released data last evening saying Shamli polled highest with 67.12 percent. Briefing reporters in New Delhi in the evening, Deputy Election Commissioner, Vijay Dev appreciated the exemplary participation of voters during the polling process.

    Meanwhile, campaigning has started peaking in the areas of the state where polls are slated for Wednesday, the second phase. In this phase 11 districts having 67 assembly seats will go for polls. As only two days are left for campaigning, top leadership of all political parties including SP, Congress, BJP, BSP and RLD have lined up to address poll rallies in these areas. In this phase, 721 candidates are in the fray out of which 69 are female, while there is also a nominee from the third gender.​ 15 constituencies in the second phase have been declared as Red Alert Constituencies​,​ the ones which have three or more candidates in fray with declared criminal cases.

    In Uttarakhand, the campaigning will come to a halt tomorrow evening. For that reason political parties are leaving no stones unturned to woo voters. The state is going to polls on Wednesday. For BJP, senior party leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address two public meetings today. While, Congress National Vice-President Rahul Gandhi will participate in road shows in half a dozen assembly seats of district Haridwar.
