    Published on September 1, 2012

If you have ever considered a biking holiday abroad, you may have been put off by worries about the pace and level of fitness required for such an adventurous break. In reality, there are holidays to suit all ages and stages. Read on to discover more about taking a holiday on two wheels.

What types of cycling holidays are there?

There is certainly something to suit everyone and these types of holidays really are suitable for bikers of all ages. As a novice, take things at a gentle pace and choose relatively flat routes and destinations or for experienced cyclists, test your endurance by cycling long distance and incorporate climbs to high altitudes. Most breaks have a good mixture of on road and off road trails. The type of break you choose to go on is entirely your choice, but will be determined to some extent by your level of fitness and confidence on bicycles. You can choose from a guided cycling break abroad and join in with a group of other keen cyclists, or set off alone or with a partner or friends on a self guided cycle holiday.

Where can you go cycling abroad?

The possibilities are endless as far as location is concerned. Europe is a popular destination or travel further afield to South America or even the Far East. France provides good low terrain tracks through the Loire Valley and for those seeking adventure tours abroad, the Pyrenees pose more challenging routes. Combine cycling with the sampling of some local French delicacies and good quality local wines at the end of a hard day’s work.

Spain and Italy also provide some fascinating sights and a choice of terrain to suit all cyclists. There is a fantastic choice of coastal routes along the Amalfi coast and through Andalucia, or head inland to the spectacular Lake Garda or explore the rugged regions of Catalonia.

America and the Far East offer many different terrains and sightseeing opportunities. Visit far flung destinations such as Costa Rica, Laos, Nicaragua and Thailand and immerse yourself in local customs and culture.

What is included in a cycling holiday abroad?

As with most adventure holidays, everything is taken care of for you before you set off. Travel tickets, accommodation and the services of a tour guide, if preferred, is generally included. Equipment including bikes and helmets can be hired and paid for locally on arrival at your destination, but if you prefer to take your own bike, this can be arranged easily with most flight operators. You will need to ensure that your bike is compatible with the tour that you choose. The only extras that you will probably need to budget for while on holiday are your food and drink.

For an action packed holiday that combines sightseeing, vigorous exercise and plenty of rest and relaxation, consider a biking holiday abroad. The world really is your oyster and can be enjoyed with friends, family or other likeminded individuals. Organising your adventure holiday could not be simpler.
