  • Academy Award Nominated Psychological Thriller; ‘Black Swan’ Dances Its Way To DVD

    Published on June 7, 2011

Dark, twisted ballet drama, Black Swan releases on DVD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Excel Home Entertainment.

Directed by visionary director Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan is a visually stunning and brilliantly performed saga of a ballerina and her descent into madness under the pressure of playing the lead in the ballet Swan Lake. The Academy Award  Best Picture nominee is an odd hybrid of backstage melodrama and psychological horror, anchored by Natalie Portman’s Oscar winning role and two splendid supporting performances of Mila Kunis (Date Night )and Winona Ryder(Girl, Interrupted)

Hailed as “…wicked, sexy and ultimately devastating… fascinating,” by Daily Variety, Aronfsky’s film is reminiscent of Roman Polanski’s Repulsion (1965) and The Tenant (1976) in  that they all depict a protagonist’s nightmarish descent into madness.

Synopsis: Set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a repressed dancer who seeks perfection at the cost of anything, including her own mental stability. When director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly, but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

With the right mixture of ballet and shattering schizophrenia, one is drawn deeper and deeper into one of the most disturbing descents into madness ever put on screen.

Black Swan DVD Special Features include Black Swan metamorphosis: A behind the scenes documentary with Darren Aronofsky.

Black Swan is available on DVD at Rs. 499 at all leading stores across the country.
