Boston: The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named BVH Integrated Services as a winner of their 2020 Silver Engineering Excellence Award for their work on UMass Boston’s Transformation Utility, Landscape and Roadway Project.

The 2020 Engineering Excellence Awards were recently announced and will be celebrated at the 2021 ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala. The awards celebrate innovation, ingenuity, and excellence in engineering achievement.

In 2011 BVH was hired to redesign and install campus utilities, storm water measures, a roadway system, walkways, bike lanes, open spaces and landscaping. The University of Massachusetts Boston, the city’s only public university, was an insular, car-centric commuter campus built on a former landfill. The project was part of UMass Boston’s strategic plan to fulfill an ambitious 2025 vision, which is marked by striking increases in student population, research activity, and global reach and reputation. The strategic plan included campus changes, as guided by an architectural masterplan completed in 2009. Reinventing the 1970s campus, the plan called for several new buildings along with circulation corridors, utilities and landscaping. Seven agencies, ten years, 13 subconsultants, 24 miles of utilities, 800+ trees and 972 meetings later, its well on its way to becoming the walkable, green, high-performing campus envisioned by the University’s 25-year master plan. It has also become a popular destination for the surrounding community, thanks to new public access through campus to the city’s 47-mile Harbor Walk.
