Afghanistan: 59 people killed as flash floods struck the country

In Afghanistan, at least 59 people were killed and 143 injured as flash floods struck the country following heavy rains. Kandahar and Helmand provinces were the most affected by the floods that hit nine out of the 17 provinces in the country following heavy rains since Saturday.

An official said the number of casualties could rise as communication systems had been disrupted in many parts of the country. A Disaster Ministry spokesman said at least 2,000 houses were destroyed in floods, besides, schools and hospitals.

The spokesman said hundreds of trapped people have been rescued and taken to temporary camps by the security forces.

He said about 8,000 families have been provided food and other assistance. Although the rain has stopped and water receded, displaced people were still staying at temporary camps.
