Five-time world champion MC Mary Kom defeated Aigerim Kessenayeva of Kazakhstan to reach the quarterfinals of 48 kg category at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi this evening. The 35-year-old, who got a first round bye, won the pre-quarterfinal-match beating her Kazak opponent by an unanimous 5-0 decision.

Earlier in the day, another Indian boxer Manisha Maun defeated World Champion Dina Zholamanby from Kazakhstan 5-0 in 54 kg category to enter the quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old Indian debutant had defeated Christina Cruz of the US also by an unanimous 5-0 decision to qualify for the pre-quarterfinals round. The Haryana pugilist punched way above her weight and was in complete control throughout against her opponent, who is a two-time World bronze medallist.
