  • Albania’s government will give 30, 000 Kalashnikov automatic weapons and 50 million bullets to Afghanistan for its national police in an effort to contribute in the fight against terror, the authorities said on Wednesday.

Albania has already contributed to the U.S.-led offensive against the Taliban in Afghanistan by sending 44 combat troops in July, its first likely to fight abroad since the World War II.

“We decided the handover, without a fee, of 30,000 automatic weapons of 7.62 mm, model 56 and 50,000,000 bullets of the same type to the Afghan government to back the endeavors of the international coalition against terrorism,” the government said.

Albania has still a big stockpile of weapons it inherited from the past. Although its depots were ransacked by mobs, angry for losing money in pyramid investment schemes in 1997, Albania has still an aging stock of weapons, some of which it is destroying, selling or donating.

Upon return from the NATO summit in Lisbon, capital of Portugal last month, Prime Minister Sali Berisha declared Albanian troops would stay in Afghanistan as long as they are required.
