According to a recent survey fielded by the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), an organization which represents highly specialized dentists known as endodontists who save patients’ natural teeth and treat dental emergencies, 68% of American adults said they would consider giving a toothbrush to someone they know this holiday season.
The survey of 1,000 U.S. adults also found that:
- 40% reported they have damaged a tooth, filling or crown while eating a holiday treat.
- Nearly 1 in 4 (24%) American adults don’t intend on eating as many sweets or desserts this holiday season.
- Nearly 1 in 4 (23%) say they would consider giving an oral irrigation tool, such as a Waterpik, as a gift to someone they know this holiday season.
Experts from the AAE are available to talk about how to keep your teeth healthy during the treat-filled holidays, as well as the importance of keeping up with preventive care in these times. They’ll also offer advice on what to do if you have tooth pain.

Avina K. Paranjpe, BDS, M.S., MSD, Ph.D. Dr. Avina Paranjpe is associate professor, Endodontics, at University of Washington School of Dentistry. Dr. Paranjpe says there is definitely an increase in cracked tooth cases she is seeing in the graduate endodontic clinic and in private practice.
