Mumbai: To spread awareness on road safety among the people & to reduce road accidents in India, The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways organizedIndia’s first-evermonth-long campaign on National Road Safety. Ms Meeta Mehra, Chapter Chairperson, FLO Amritsar flagged off an all-women’s car rally from Amritsar to Kanyakumari. Shree Rajnath Singh, Minister of Defence of India & Shree Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport & Highways of India were also present virtually during the flag off.
All the members of FICCI FLO Amritsar along with Garima Avtar and other convoy members took the safety pledge and drove to the Golden Gate of Amritsar city. The 14 car convoy started on 18th January 2021 will be culminating tomorrow, 29th January 2021 at Kanyakumari. The mission of this rally is to raise awareness on road safety. They travelled through the states of Punjab, Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala & Tamil Nadu & will finally culminate in the beautiful city of Kanyakumari.
The convoy is led by Garima Avtar, a member of YFLO Delhi. She is a Professional Extreme Rally Driver trained by Gaurav Gill who is a recipient of Arjuna Award.
Jahnabi Phookan, President, FICCI FLO said “It is an honour to be part of this noble campaign. Road safety in India is a huge issue, last year over 1.5 lakh people died in road accidents, nearly 30 children lost their lives & around 3 lakh people crippled across the country. Around 71% of road accidents in India are caused due over speeding. These accidents have a significant effect on the nation’s overall economy”.
Meeta Mehra, Chairperson, FLO Amritsar said “It is a very proud moment for all members of FLO Amritsar to flag off this car rally as a vision of FLO’s National President Ms. Jahnabi Phookan on road safety”.
Garima Avtar, lead driver of the convoy said: “FLO has been extending their support for the cause and is putting in great efforts to make our nation free from avoidable road crashes. The aim of this endeavour is to bring road safety awareness amongst our fellow citizens & change the way we drive. After all, the change starts with each one of us & it’s our responsibility to ensure our safety and the safety of everyone on the road”.
