Andrew and Luke Lazarus Ready to Pass Torch on Icon, “The Beach” Hotel in Newcastle

Newcastle, NSW: Andrew and Luke Lazarus, the father and son real estate team known for their expertise in hotels, are excited to share the news that one of their most iconic properties, The Beach Hotel on Mereweather Beach, known as “The Beaches,” is for sale. The addition to the marketplace comes on the heels of the Lazarus family winning DA approval for on-site renovations.

The 1850 sqm Newcastle property, utilized as a multi-level corner pub, sits on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, offering patrons panoramic views of Mereweather Beach that extend to Bar Beach. It was built in 1939 and has gained heritage-listed status for its charming art-deco architecture and legendary history of drawing patrons from all over the world.

Andrew, the senior Lazarus, has been revamping and managing hotels throughout the Sydney area for over thirty years. His company, Eastern Hotels Group, which owns The Exchange Hotel, The Eastern, and Shoal Bay Country Club, is known for its dedication to communities surrounding its properties – taking local needs into consideration during the upgrade process and hosting a variety of philanthropic community events at each locale.

“We look for properties with great bare bones and plenty of potential,” shared Luke Lazarus. “The Beach Hotel is everything we look for in a pub and this DA approval will allow another operator to renovate what is an iconic venue with an irreplaceable location.”

Luke Lazarus added, “We took on ‘The Beaches’ project because of its incredible location and endless potential. Our goal was to ensure we kept the heart of it alive while adding value to both the property and the community it resides in – and by gaining the DA, we accomplished that. The new owner can take this property to the next level.”

The approved DA for “The Beaches” allows for $3.1 million in renovations, providing the new owners with the ability to increase capacity by moving live music from downstairs to the underused first floor and adding decking to a terrace. The DA also allows for extended hours of operation, including an innovative early opening café. In the current market, the property is valued at around $40 million. HTL Property’s Dan Dragicevich and Andrew Jolliffee are overseeing the sale.
