To evade detection, the bookies are placing their bets via popular messenger app, WhatsApp during the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches. Sources said, that these bookies have several WhatsApp groups where they add gamblers and fix a rate for a particular match. The betting goes on as per the match’s schedule. Betting rates are different for all matches and players. Sources also relived information that the rates may go up or dip as per the match rate or score of the player. The bookies use code words to place their bets. Each player and team has a code word. And this is the case for other other cricket matches too. One might place a bet of Rs 100 and win Rs 1000…the process continues. As per sources the messenger app is user-friendly. Because anybody can move around freely and place your bets. Minute by minute details is uploaded in the groups. This is an inter-state syndicate. The main agent can be in Delhi and still operate a betting activity in Assam. Activities of betting are rampant in Fancy Bazar area of Guwahati, Nagaon, Hojai and Tinsukia. In the last few days, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Assam Police arrested a number of bookies and busted rackets in the State. Acting on a tip-off, a CID team conducted an operation against the IPL bookies in Guwahati on Wednesday and apprehended two bookies from two different corners of the city – Noonamti and Fancy Bazar. The apprehended bookies were identified as Ramesh Kumar Agarwal and Ajit Tiwari. Police sources informed that investigation in this regard is going on. Police is watching everything. Even the security forces keep an eye on social media activities.
