GUWAHATI : On the night of 20th and 21st, the police have arrested 453 soil brokers from across the state in a major operation| Earlier this month, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma complained to the officials of the land revenue department that land issues faced by the common people without bribing touts were not being resolved. Assam Police has arrested 453 land brokers in raids across the state since Monday night as part of a crackdown on “parties” of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government or touts working in land revenue and circle offices.

The raids came two weeks after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asked land revenue and circle officials to get rid of land brokers from their offices before October 3. On Monday night, Assam Police arrested about 450 land brokers from different parts of the state. We have a list of about 700 people who are involved in taking illegal commissions from the common people and harassing them. We will try and get them all by Tuesday evening, Sarma said on Tuesday.

I again warn the Government officials not to keep in touch with these land brokers and help the citizens without taking bribes or through middlemen. We want to change the existing system and abolish ‘Dalal Raj’ (rule of brokers). Earlier this month, Sarma complained to the officials of the land revenue department that land issues faced by the common people without bribing touts were not being resolved. Urging all officers to dispose of all pending files in their offices expeditiously, the CM informed that the government will launch Mission Basundhara, a scheme to help residents in issues related to their land such as mutation, improvement in names, permission for sale, updating of records etc.
