  • Awareness against child marriage, child trafficking in tea garden areas of Assam’s Darrang District

    Mangaldai  : Keeping in mind the increase in the number of child marriage, child trafficking and child labour victims in tea garden areas, non government organization TNXT and labour development association Darrang  in collaboration with District Child Protection Unit, (DCPU) Darrang on Saturday organized an awareness programme against child marriage child trafficking and child labour in Tangni Tea Estate near here. The meet was addressed by several speakers including, Kobendra Warisha, the PO-cum-DCPO, Rajen Ch Das, Chairperson Child Welfare Committee (CWC) , Dr Ramesh Ch Goswami Sub Divisional Medical and Health Officer (SDM&HO), assistant manager of Tangni tea estate, representative from Dhula Police among others. The speakers spoke about the evil effects of child marriage and  the high rates of child trafficking from the tea garden areas. They dwelt in length about the consumption rates of alcohol in the tea garden areas and how it leads to disturb home and families thereby misleading the children. Other relevant issues including the teenage pregnancy and high rates of anemia among women and children was also discussed in the meeting. The day long awareness campaign also featured house to house visit  of the tea garden labourers and awareness postering among others.
