Big Challenges for Assam Rifles: Smuggling rising near Indo-Myanmar border,goods worth about Rs 300 crore, seized

Guwahati :The Kovid-19 epidemic is being smuggled along with a large consignment of drugs along the Indo-Myanmar border. The Assam Rifles guarding the 1,700-km-long Indo-Myanmar border foiled a smuggling attempt on Saturday night and seized a large consignment of drugs. Sources in the Assam Rifles told media persons that it was now around 3 am on Saturday The jawans on duty came to know of some suspicious movement on the international border in Hololhai village near Moreh in East Manipur. Officials said the unidentified miscreants fled towards Myanmar when challenged. After a thorough investigation of the area, a stock of smuggled medicines packed in cartons was found. In the border town of Moreh in Manipur, customs (preventive) officials were handed over size items.

Customs (preventive) officials have started legal action, and the seized drugs are worth around Rs 2.80 crore. The details of the composition of the drugs seized by the Assam Rifles have not been disclosed.On the other hand, personnel of Assam Rifles apprehended one person and seized 1000 grams of suspected brown sugar worth Rs 1.76 crore from his possession, which took place on Saturday night at Harolehai village in Tengpal district of Manipur.Customs (preventive) officials have started legal action, and the seized drugs are worth around Rs 2.80 crore.

The details of the composition of the drugs seized by the Assam Rifles have not been disclosed. During the last six months, Assam Rifles played an active role in curbing the smuggling of narcotics and smuggling substances. The Kovid-19 epidemic, between the Kangwai battalion of Assam Rifles on the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur, also led to an awareness program.A Home Department official said that Lt. General Sukhdeep Sangwan, Director General of Assam Rifles, held a meeting regarding international border security on the instructions of Home Ministry of India Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and other senior security officials. Assured him that he would not allow any kind of intrusion here. He proposed to increase security checkpoints along the border. For this, he sought help from the government. Significantly, since July 1, Assam Rifles has seized about 29.80 crores narcotics coming from Myanmar.

He said of smuggling that the Indo-Myanmar border which is increasing the smuggling cases and the challenges of the force ‘Assam Rifles’ deployed to guard the border there are increasing. In the last few days, Assam Rifles caught smuggling goods worth about Rs 300 crore from this one point only. Which had the most drugs.On the other hand, Myanmar – a citizen of India border in the region alleged that there is a free movement regime i.e. FMR on the Indo-Myanmar border. It was built for people living in 16-16 km area on both sides of the border so that they can meet their relatives living on the other side of the border. Also, the basic necessities of everyday life (on foot or head, not on the car) can be brought. Due to non-issue of border passes, anyone is showing cross-border to Myanmar by showing their Aadhar card.

Apart from Tarkarki, this area is also very sensitive due to the militant organizations operating here. Whether people of any militant organization are coming across the border is not recognized. Mention that in the last week of August 2020, Assam Rifles arrested 5 foreign intruders, thwarting the big conspiracy to smuggle gold on the Indo-Myanmar border. The four foreign intruders captured are originally citizens of Myanmar.The Assam Rifles recovered 36.316 kg of gold from their possession. The value of the recovered gold was estimated to be around Rs 11 crore in the international market. The Assam Rifles handed over the five foreign intruders along with gold to the customs department. Now the customs department has informed the Myanmar embassy after registering a case against smuggling.According to a senior Assam Rifles official, there was constant input from the intelligence department deployed along the Indo-Myanmar border that a large number of drugs were being smuggled through the Myanmar route. These drugs will be sent to some intruders from Myanmar. Based on intelligence input, the Assam Rifles’ Seership Battalion laid siege to the entire area and laid a trap for the intruders.
