A landmark bill to protect whistle blowers was today introduced in the Lok Sabha. The bill provides for adequate protection to the persons reporting corruption or willful misuse of power. It also has the provision for a regular mechanism to be put in place that will encourage such persons to disclose the information on corruption and misuse of power by public servants. Adequate safeguards also provided for against victimisation of whistle blowers. The bill, introduced by the Minister of State in PMO, Mr. Prithviraj Chavan, is also aimed at punishing those responsible for revealing the identity of the complainants. Punitive action is also suggested for persons making false or frivolous complaints. The objective of the Public Interest Disclosure and Protection to Persons Making the Disclosures Bill, 2010, popularly known as whistle blowers bill, is to help in curbing corruption in government and public sector undertakings by providing adequate protection to the whistle blowers.
