    Kokrajhar: A total 797 graduates including 40 PhD, 525 Post Graduate (PG) were awarded degrees during the 1st Convocation of Bodoland University(BU), Kokrajhar today.

    Assam Governor and Chancellor Prof Jagadish Mukhi attended the function and awarded the degrees.

    A total 3,195 students have completed their courses in various streams including arts, science, computers and MBA from the university of which 797 graduates including PhD-40, 525 Post Graduate(PG), 150 BA, 4 B.Ed and 56 B.Sc attended the convocation and received the degrees.

    In his speech, Mukhi said this is the day of glory not only for the university but also for the guardians whose children have been studying in the university and for those who have already studied here. “ I consider this Convocation as an important marker  in the life of this university because it shows not just what this university has achieved till now but also the vision it upholds for the future”, he said.

    He said that if the university develops a good educational system there will be a good flow of students from the neighbouring states of Meghalaya and West Bengal and . the university can attract students from neighbouring Bhutan and Bangladesh.

    Stating that a university stands for universal values, the Governor said it should be open-ended for intellectual participation and dissemination of knowledge.

    Earlier the Governor of Assam unveils the statue of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma at the entrance of the Bodoland University campus.

    Chief Guest of the function, Prof KK Aggarwal, Chairman, National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi said the Bodoland University should develop adequate good quality literature for Tribal Arts, cultures, languages including dialects, medicinal practices, medicinal plants, fauna & flora, ancient sciences practiced by tribes and ancient practices of sustainable development etc.

    Aggrawal suggested attention to quality and diversity along with proper documentation. He also said the university should try to attract students from outside the region without compromising the interests of the region.

    The Vice Chancellor of the Bodoland University Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh said the BU in its journey from 2009 has been able to complete 5 batches of Post Graduate, 2 batches of Under Graduate, 4 batches of B.Ed., one batch of M.Ed, 5 batches of Post Graduate in Human Rights and 6 batches of Diploma in Bamboo Technology. He said on the occasion of convocation programme, the BU conferred certificates to 40 PhD degree holders, 525 PG, 150 BA, 15 Bed and 56 BSc degree holders with together 797 students among 3,195 passed out students.

    The Convocation was also attended among other by Chief of BTC Hagrama Mohilary, minister Pramila Rani Brahma.

    Established in 2009 as a state university, the Bodoland University, Kokrajhar is the first and only university in Bodoland Territorial Region. The university presently has 16 postgraduates and enrolment strength is 1800 and additionally 7310 and 1200 are enrolled for undergraduates and E-Ed and M.Ed programmes in the 32 affiliated colleges.
