  • Bone-chilling cold wave sweeps north India

    A severe cold wave in north India left people shivering. The mercury in Allahabad dipped below three degrees Celsius, the first time in seven years in the district.

    Churk town in Mirzapur remained coldest place where the minimum temperature was recorded 0.6 degrees Celsius. At least ten people succumbed to severe cold in the state during last 24 hours.

    AIR Correspondent reports, the cold wave is wreaking havoc on poor and shelter-less people. A man was found dead outside Charbagh railway station on Tuesday.

    Three people each died in Aligarh and Jaunpur while one each died in Bareilly, Agra and Mirzapur due to cold.

    The poor people are spending night on pavements and courtyards of public buildings where there is no means to save them from the wrath of the nature.

    Bonfire arrangement is seems to be inadequate and distribution of blankets has yet not been startedt.

    In Uttarakhand, a severe cold wave alongwith fog and frost threw the normal life out of gear at many places. MET Department predicts that weather will clear during next 24 hours.

    AIR correspondent reports, the cold and fog forced the people to remain indoors in major parts of the state. Rail services are also badly affected in plane areas.

    Meanwhile, the Gangotri Highway has been re-opened after a bout of heavy snowfall whereas around 20 tourists belonging to Delhi and Kolkata, who were struck at Harsil, have gone back after the opening of the route.

    In Kashmir, Leh town registered a low of minus 20 degrees Celsius, even though the minimum temperatures across the region appreciated by a couple of degrees. Other parts of the Valley saw the night temperatures appreciating as Gulmarg skiing resort recorded a low of minus 9.2 deg C.

    The national capital experienced a bone-chilling morning as the mercury plummeted to the season’s lowest of 3.7 degree Celsius and icy winds blew across the city added to the woes of the people.

    Punjab and Haryana faced the wrath of cold conditions with the minimum temperatures dropping sharply while dense fog in the two states threw normal life out of gear.

    Most parts of Madhya Pradesh are in grip of severe cold wave conditions. AIR Bhopal correspondent reports that cold wave conditions reportedly claimed seven lives in the state so far.

    Cold wave conditions have worsened in the state as temperatures fell by another degree across the state. Both day and night temperatures have fallen.

    Datia and Umaria recorded lowest minimum temperature of 0.2 degrees while Guna recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 1.2 degree Celsius in the last 20 years.

    District administration in many places has either changed timings or ordered closure of schools due to biting cold.

    No respite from chilling cold seems in coming days as the met department has warned that minimum temperature might remain four degrees or less in parts of Madhya Pradesh.
