  • British PM expected to meet Jeremy Corbyn in a bid to break Brexit deadlock

British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to meet Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn in a bid to break the Brexit deadlock.

After her EU withdrawal deal was rejected thrice by legislators in the parliament, May yesterday said she would talk to the Labour leader, Mr Corbyn to see whether there is common ground to overcome what she called a national crisis.

Jeremy Corbyn tweeted that he has agreed to meet the Prime Minister to ensure that a disastrous no deal outcome is prevented.  May’s move to hold talks has angered some Brexiteers, with Wales Minister Nigel Adams resigning his role. Prominent Brexiteer Boris Johnson accused May of entrusting the final handling of Brexit to Labour.

The Prime Minister’s decision to turn to Labour, which wants to stay in a customs union with the EU, may make a soft Brexit that would keep Britain’s economy closely aligned to the world’s biggest trading bloc. Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay said such an exit from the union would be undesirable.

The United Kingdom was supposed to leave the EU last Friday, but three years after Britons voted for Brexit in a referendum, it is still unclear how, when or even if it will exit the bloc.
