  • British PM Theresa May to face a no-confidence vote after parliament rejects Brexit deal

    Published on January 16, 2019

British Prime Minister Theresa May will face a no confidence vote tonight.

This comes after the parliament earlier today rejected her Brexit deal by 230 votes, triggering political chaos that could lead to a disorderly exit from the EU or even to a reversal of the 2016 decision to leave.

Soon after the defeat, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn submitted a motion of no-confidence against May’s government. May has told MPs she will return to the House of Commons with an alternative plan next week, provided she survives the confidence vote.

The small Northern Irish DUP party, which supports May’s government and refused to back the deal, said it would stand behind May in the no-confidence vote. Pro-Brexit Conservatives also said they would support her.
