- Session focuses on surface preparation, Interior and Exterior Wood Coatings
- Wood-working experts share their insights on sustainable coatings for export market destinations
Mumbai : Canadian Wood, the crown agency of the government of British Columbia (B.C.) hosted another enriching webinar focused on the theme Wood Coatings and Best Practices. The webinar was a part of Canadian Wood’s WOODINNOVATIONS series, and highlighted the benefits of wood coatings, along with its best practices.

It is a known fact that coatings are applied on wooden surfaces to protect them from different natural and man-made factors, which can later cause harm to wood. This possibly happens over many years due to exposure to different forms of weather. To increase the durability of wooden applications, wood coating is extremely important, as it addresses the factors responsible for the performance of wood in both domestic and industrial applications. The coating also helps the wood to stay protected from UV radiation, abrasion, moisture, chemicals, weathering, and attack from microbes such as fungi and mould.
In addition to making the wood look aesthetic and appealing, coatings are designed to protect it from weathering. With this demand for protection, coatings and preservatives continue to grow, especially with the industry primarily being driven by a rebound in residential construction activity, which in turn benefits applications for which wood coatings and preservatives are used, namely furniture panelling, cladding, decking, and siding. A major factor driving the wood coatings market is the growth in furniture production, both in domestic and export markets.
The webinar also highlighted the importance of surface preparation, interior & exterior coatings, and sustainable coatings. Industry experts, Mr. Deepak Chaudhari – Wood Finishing Consultant, Mr. Pankaj Bassi – Country Manager, ICA SpA, Mr. Marco Mancini – Export Technical Manager, Renner Italia, and Mr. Volker Benek – Business Development Manager, Plantag Gruppe, shared their experience and underlined the advantages of coating, and covered the methods and techniques related to wood coatings.
Speaking about the webinar, Pranesh Chhibber, Country Director, Canadian Wood said: “For long-lasting performance of wooden products, wood coating is extremely important as it protects the wood from numerous external factors. As the structural and furniture industry grows in India, it is essential for Indian wood consumers to know about wood coatings and the best practices associated with the maintenance of wood products and applications. As a responsible player in the market, we conducted this knowledge-sharing webinar along with the wood-working industry experts. We believe that we’re able to create awareness and educate the industry on the subject, and we look forward to hosting many of these wood-related engaging sessions in the near future.”
The webinar talked about the evolution of wood coatings that happen over a period of years. The practice started with the wax and linseed oil, shellac, etc., where it went through pre catalysed nitrocellulose with fancy coatings, and then eventually the evolution went towards the water-based coatings, UV coatings, and bio coating.
Canadian Wood is known for conducting a series of webinars on various topics of interest and relevance to the Indian woodworking industry. These webinar sessions with woodworking industry colleagues, have been covering a wide range of topics of significance to the wood industry, thus encouraging the use of certified wood from B.C. Canada.
