Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, over burning of government properties by a mob during a protest rally in Srinagar, official sources said Sunday.

Police say participants from the rally later set on fire three government offices, including the Crime Branch and Power Development Department headquarters.

The Mirwaiz called for an half-an-hour sit in protest in the heart of the city and later left for his home despite assurances made by him that the crowd will disperse quietly after the sit-in.

During his Eid sermon at Eidgah, where thousands of people offered prayers, the Mirwaiz asked them to march to Lal Chowk to stage a 30-minute protest against the recent killing of people in Kashmir.

The Mirwaiz has been been charged under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 121 (waging war against the state), 153 (wantonly giving provocation to cause riots), 336 (act endangering the life and property of others), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with the intent to destroy houses or other properties and 148 (armed with deadly weapons) of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC), the sources said.
