Eye Cancer is a life-altering disease – it not just can potentially wipe out the vision but also can endanger the eye and the life. India harbors a big tumor burden but lacks an organized approach to cost-effective and protocol-based management. Every year, about 10,000 new eye cancers are diagnosed in India, 70 – 80% in adults and 20 – 30% in children. About 1500 children are diagnosed with retinoblastoma each year in India. India, which has 16% of the world’s population, harbors about 25-30% of eye cancers, but has fewer than 5% of the infrastructure and trained manpower to manage these patients appropriately.

Upon early detection, complete cure is possible with appropriate treatment. A few decades ago, retinoblastoma was considered to be uniformly fatal, while the current management strategy is able to save life in over 95% of children, salvage the eye in 90% and save vision in 85%. Our public awareness campaigns will hopefully help in early diagnosis.

The first formally trained Comprehensive Ocular Oncologist in India, Dr Santosh G Honavar, working along with the expert oncologist Dr Vijay Anand P Reddy, have diagnosed and managed several thousand patients of eye cancer in the last 18 years. Dr Honavar is the recipient of the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award by the Government of India for his protocols that provide improved life, eye and vision salvage in patients with eye cancer. CFS Hyderabad has been conceived as the National Referral Centre for Ocular Oncology in India, with access to patients from needy parts of Asia, Middle-East and Africa, and offering contemporary and cost-effective approaches to preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancers of the eye, accessible to all. The centre aims to establish a new benchmark in the comprehensive care of eye cancers.

The ‘National Reporting Centre for Ophthalmic Pathology’ headed by an experienced ophthalmic pathologist, Dr. Kaustubh Mulay, and assisted by an International Board of experts, is all set to provide a complete range of world-class diagnostic facilities to all the ophthalmologists India and the region.
