    GUWAHATI : In Assam, ten more people were killed in the devastating floods today, while more than 81 lakh people are in distress under the influence of the floods. The death toll from the floods this year has risen to 177. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin, one person was also reported missing in Cachar district. Officials said most of the rivers had a declining trend.

    However, Kopili in Nagaon, Barak in Cachar and Karimganj and Kushiyara in Karimganj are flowing above the danger mark. In Silchar town which has been submerged for over a week, indian air force helicopters are trying to provide relief in areas where the administration has not yet reached by dropping packets of food, drinking water bottles and other essential items into the air. Cachar Deputy Commissioner Kirti Jalli said the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), UNICEF and OXFM have set up boat-plying water treatment units to cater to the needy in Silchar and its surrounding areas. Transport Minister Parimal Shuklabaidya visited Borjalenga and Narsinghpur development blocks in his constituency Dholai to inspect the distribution of relief material to the affected people.

    The ASDMA bulletin said that 2,254 villages under 61 revenue divisions have been affected by the current wave of floods across the state, while 1,91,194 people have taken shelter in 538 relief camps. The flood waters have damaged 79 roads and five bridges, while six embankments have been breached. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reported the massive damage caused by the flooding of Pohumara river at Medikuchi in Bhawanipur constituency of Assam. He looked at the circumstances and said, “I am sad to see this manjar. Many places in the area are still waterlogged. While three persons died in Cachar, one each died in Dhubri and Morigaon districts. Three more persons, including a child, are reported missing from Cachar and Chirang districts. The death toll due to floods and landslides across Assam since the first-ever disaster in the state on April 6 this year has now risen to 177. Cachar is the worst-affected district with over 8.62 lakh people, followed by Barpeta where around 5.73 lakh people are affected and over 5.16 lakh people have been affected in Nagaon.
