  • New Delhi  : An 85-year-old Raj Kumar had a miraculous survival from a massive heart attack at Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital, Dwarka, as a team of experienced doctors used special technique and hardware to unblock the calcified artery of the patient, who had remote chances of survival. The patient was first taken to a nearby nursing home in, but they were not able to record his vital parameters such as pulse and blood pressure. After that, he was immediately shifted to Aakash Hospital, Dwarka in an emergency.

Doctors at Aakash Hospital found that the patient was altered sensorium (changes in sensory and brain function) due to hypotension. Moreover, an ECG was conducted, and the heart rate was found to be around 20-30/min, and also showed a massive heart attack.

“In such cases, the patient is immediately taken for angioplasty in cath lab, and his blocked blood vessel is unblocked, without losing time. When we conducted angiography, it was found that his right coronary artery was severely calcified and was 100% blocked. While doing the procedure, it was also found that the vessel had an anomaous course. Since his condition was critical and both BP and pulse were not detectable, he was taken on ventilator and given injections to increase his blood pressure. A temporary pacemaker was also placed.  After that, we conducted a complex angioplasty procedure and implanted 2 stents in his right artery. Due to calcified and tortuos anatomy, it was difficult to deliver stents. Hence, guideliner (mother and child technique) was used successfully. His heart rate returned to normal after the successful procedure and the temporary pacing wire was also removed,” Patient recovered fully in 2-3 days and dischaged in stable condition.” said Dr. Ashish Agarwal Director, Cardiology -, Aakash Healthcare, Dwarka.

Dr. Agarwal said that it was quite a challenging task as his artery had huge calcium deposits, due to which doctors faced difficulty in delivering and deploying the stent.

“We call it a complex angioplasty procedure due to the several challenges and risks associated with it. In such situations, we use special hardware which helps us in delivering and deploying the stent. After successful angioplasty, the patient was shifted to an ICU where he was on the ventilator for 3-4 days. However,  he said.

The patient was discharged, 2-3 days after removing the wire and he is doing extremely well now, and coming for follow-ups, according to the doctor.

“Our vision is to become a leading medical institution in the country that provides state of the art facilities for management of all types of cardiovascular ailments. The services that we provide include comprehensive management of cardiovascular issues coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease and other conditions,” said Dr. Aashish Chaudhry, Managing Director, Aakash Healthcare, Dwarka.
