Cyclone Anthony battered the north Queensland coast of Australia on Sunday night, bringing wind gusts of up to 150km an hour and heavy rain as it crossed the coast near Bowen, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported on Monday.

Fallen branches and other debris littered Bowen’s central business district (CBD) on Monday morning after the north Queensland coastal town was hit by Cyclone Anthony at around 10p.m. (local time) on Sunday.

The category two cyclone tore branches from trees and brought down powerlines, leaving about 10,000 homes without power.

Electricity was still cut to most of central Bowen on Monday morning but supply to many areas was uninterrupted.

However, the town appeared to have avoided major structural damage and was spared the threat of serious flooding because the storm hit at low tide.

But a second more damaging cyclone Cyclone Yasi is still heading towards Queensland and is expected to cross the coast on Wednesday night or Thursday, the Queensland Bureau of Meteorology warned.

Queensland Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Vikash Prasad said the category one cyclone was tracking towards Queensland’s north coast and was expected to intensify very quickly over the coming days.

“It’s too early to know what category it will be (when it crosses) but we would expect it to be at least a category four,” he said.
