The cyclonic storm Ditwah has wreaked havoc in most parts of Sri Lanka with relentless rain resulting in loss of life and property. The cyclone has claimed 123 lives, left 130 missing, and affected over three lakh 70 thousand people. After days of relentless rains, Sri Lanka is beginning to see a gradual reduction in rainfall as Cyclone Ditwah moves north-northwest toward the Tamil Nadu coast.
Rescue in Sri Lanka has been strongly bolstered with the arrival of Indian aid at a time when the island is facing one of the worst natural disasters since the floods in May 2017. The experienced NDRF personnel and the Indian helicopters further boost the response efforts in saving lives. Authorities have said the death toll has risen to 123 so far, while adding that many rivers are at danger levels. Under Operation Sagar Bandhu, India has sent two aircraft full of relief material of 21 tonnes, which will add to the rescue efforts on the island. Authorities have urged the public to cooperate in ensuring evacuation in affected areas.
