MARSHFIELD, MA: Datasafe Information Security (http://destruction.com), an independent document destruction firm focused on the secure shredding of documents, computers and electronic devices with the objective of  preserving security, today announced the appointment of Eric Carey of Pembroke, MA as a partner in the firm.

In this role, Carey will work with the firm’s founder Rick Carey (Eric’s father) in guiding the growth of the firm, which is entering its 30thyear of business and which is the longest running one of the few remaining document destrtion firms in the state under independent ownership.

Datasafe (destruction.com) provides secure document destruction for businesses across a wide range of industries, with a territory stretching from north of Boston (Woburn) through the Metro West region, and to the South Coast region (Fall River, New Bedford) and Cape Cod. The firm differentiates itself from the competition in a number of important ways; first, that people who contact Datasafe (destruction.com) will speak with a “live” person, and that the firm works to customize programs for individual clients. “Reputable shredding firms understand the importance of creating an impenetrable chain of secure custody of documents, through the entire destruction process,” said Rick Carey. “But for most customers, that is not enough. What has happened in our industry is that most of the companies have been acquired by large, faceless entities where meaningful customer service is virtually non-existent.”

He added, “We’re different. We believe in a local and personal approach to service. We know our customers. We speak with them “live.” We are a local company, locally owned and responsive.” He added, “Our Datasafe trucks are all equipped to shred documents right on the client site, and provide written certification of document destruction to comply with client needs.”

Carey launched the firm in 1990 after a career in security and law enforcement.  “We understand the importance of security and as importantly that each customer has individual needs. We work diligently to accommodate client needs.”

Eric Carey, the firm’s newest partner, brings a diverse background to his expanded role in the family business. After studying marketing both at Quincy College and then the University of Tampa, he worked in a variety of small businesses endeavors including a night club, and a “Doggie Day Care” facility. At his various small business engagements, he experienced the importance of listening to customers and providing the necessary service according to the customer’s wishes.

He said, “This is an interesting time to be in the business of information security and the destruction of sensitive documents. We have all read many articles about how often websites and company infrastructures are compromised; and we all know that the need to guard against it is very real. Widely publicized stories of hacks into large company databases have made people aware of the cyber threat. What they may not fully realize is that the threat is every bit as real when it comes to papers that are discarded, as well as old electronic devices that are no longer used.”

He continued, “In both cyber security and document security, the largest cause of a breach is human error. If you think about a company which stores financial or medical records and disposes of them in a non secure manner, the information can fall into the wrong hands and identities can get stolen. The only way to be certain that information on paper documents, or even smart phones, laptops and tablets does not come back to cause problems is to see it securely destroyed.”

He added, “Following secure protocols is essential. And we also recommend that companies provide training for all employees on these steps.”

He said, “I’m delighted to have the chance to play a key leadership role in a 30 year old family business, especially one which is involved with its customers. I enjoy talking with our clients at length and solving their unique challenges. This is a company where customers come first, and not a giant corporation where everyone is just a number.”

In nearly 30 years, Datasafe has shredded 550 million documents and there have been no identify theft or data breaches.

Rick Carey, founder of Datasafe, said, “It’s great to welcome Eric to this leadership role in our company. His business perspective and industry knowledge will be of great benefit to our present and future clients.” He added, “We are seeing renewed interest in our services, particularly because many of our competitors have been acquired by and absorbed into our primary competitor, a multinational corporation that often ignores the needs of local businesses. We think it is crucial that business owners be made aware of the security challenges that exist if businesses do not properly dispose of sensitive information. But we also know that personalized customer service is critical.”
