  • Deaths from Cholera in Haiti Increase to 796

    Published on November 13, 2010

The Haitian Ministry of Health reported that the cholera death toll rose to 796, including 13 in Port au Prince, where the disease spreads rapidly despite strong sanitary measures.

According to the website of the Ministry on Friday, the country registered another 72 deaths in the last hours and the number of infected are over 12,303 people hospitalised in various regions of the country.

It states the situation has worsened considerably in the capital district of Carrefour, Cit Soleil, Delmas, Kenscoff, Petion Ville, et Tabarre and Croix-des-Bouquets, with 13 deaths and 443 new infected.

Although since the beginning of this week the government and humanitarian groups reinforced the medical care in Port-au-Prince with seven makeshift emergency centers, cholera continues to spread rapidly among the population.

The authorities predict a worse scenario because of the deplorable conditions of the drainage and hydraulic networks in that city, with at least three million people, almost half of whom live in refugee camps because of the quake of 12th January.

For this reason, the UN urgently requested yesterday, USD 163.8 million dollars from international donors to contain the epidemic in the Caribbean nation, after estimating that at least 200,000 people could be infected over the next six months.
