    Kokrajhar: The conscious citizens, guardians, student organizations has expressed serious  concern over the raising incidents of anti-social activities like  drugs, gambling, unseasonal melas in Kokrajhar and urged the district administration to check any sort of gambling, sell of drugs, unseasonal puja/mela celebrations.

    A delegation team from Bodoland Students Union(BSU) and conscious citizens today meet the Kokraihar Deputy Commissioner at his office chamber and submitted a memorandum to take necessary actions against the anti-social activities in the district.

    The delegation demanded the administration to check the anti-social activities which is on the rise in and around Kokrajhar town, stops unseasonal mela, gambling etc. The delegation also urged the district administration to prohibit encroachment and illegal construction of shops along the footpaths and also to check speed bike riding by the youths.

    The Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Partha Pratim Mazumdar assured the delegations to look into the issues and act accordingly. He also urged the civil society, social organizations for help and cooperation in checking the anti-social activities.

    The citizens expressed their concerns over the frequent and unseasonal melas in Kokrajhar town stating that anti-social activities like open gambling, selling liquor and many other money exploiting games were being practiced in these melas diluting the mind of the youths and also the atmosphere in the district.

    “Many unwanted incidents like violence among the people, and the indulgence of young generation in anti-social activities also took place which led to the degradation of the society, said Derhasat Brahma, president of Kokajhar district committee of BSU.

    He also said use of drugs, especially among the schools and college students, youths is on rise.

    “Student and young generation are our future. We cannot leave the lives of thousands of students into the hands of few vested interested people. We have the great responsibility towards the well being of the society and being one of the protector and guardian of the constitution and law and order situation, the administration have great responsibility towards the society, he said adding that ‘check and balance is impossible without the help and co- operation and the active involvement of the district administration’.

     

     

     

    Since from the past few years, guardians and many intellectuals and heads of societies has been complaining about the frequent and untimely and unseasonal organizing of melas in BTAD, especially in Kokrajhar town and also rise in drugs abuse among the youths. The trend has also led to an increase in the school dropout rate. Many of the drug users are from well-to-do families, indicating that drug dealers are specifically targeting them as an easy source of earning.
