Bangalore: In perpetuating his memory for the posterity, IFIM College, Electronic City, Bangalore conducted its Signature Event: ‘Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam- The National Level Essay Contest.’  The objective was to involve the students at all levels in the age group of 18 to 24 years across the entire Nation and to make them think and express their Vision for India by 2022. Over 4700 institutions were contacted and a whooping 11000 registrations were received.

Students from Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha, Gujarat and Maharashtra (8 states in all) participated. Thus the contest became truly national, commensurate with the spirit of the contest.

The contest was held at multiple locations and 3122 contestants who were shortlisted were screened at three levels. The final selection was made by a panel of three eminent citizens of India – Hon. Justice Mr. Santosh Hegde, Former Supreme Court Judge; Mr. Michael Patro – Sr. Assistant Editor of Deccan Herald; and Ms. Kavita Sharma – Chief of Production, NDTV Delhi.

Prizes of Rs. 125,000 under each category were announced by the Chief Guest, Prof Ranbir Singh, Vice Chancellor of National Law University Delhi and Ms Debratti Sen, CEO and Managing Director, 3M India Ltd.

Using this as an opportunity, the Centre for Excellence in Business Analytics at IFIM Business School is now building a text and sentiment model to compile a comprehensive report capturing the essence from each of the 3122 essays. This report will then be presented to the honorable Prime Minister to give him an insight into the expectations of our youth from India in the 2022 which marks the 75th year post our independence. The Essay Contest brought out the best of young minds.
