Chennai : In an amazing display of medical skill, doctors at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, Global Campus, Velapanchavadi, Chennai successfully treated a rare and complex condition that occurs in less than 1% of people worldwide and even rarer in children. The patient, a seven-year-old female child from Chennai underwent a successful complex abdominal surgery for an extremely rare condition known as Left Paraduodenal Internal Hernia, which means some of her intestines were trapped in an abnormal sac inside her belly. On top of that, her intestines were twisted (called malrotation and volvulus). This twisting cut off the blood supply to part of her intestines, causing them to die of gangrene.
Bringing its renowned expertise to bear, a team of doctors at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals was not only able to diagnose the condition successfully but also develop and execute an effective treatment plan. The team of surgeons, led by Dr. Arun Prasad, and anesthesiologists, led by Dr. Rajkumar and Dr. Prasanna Kumar, performed a delicate surgery to fix the hernia, untwist the intestines, and remove the damaged part, which lasted for 3 hours. The surgery was a success! The girl recovered well in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, under the care of Dr. K. Sasidaran, Dr. Muthiah. P, Dr. Manoj Kumar, and their team. She was discharged home after a week post-surgery with good health and she is ready to get back to her normal life.
Paraduodenal Internal Hernia is extremely rare, affecting less than 1% of people worldwide and it is rarest among the children, because it’s so rare, it can be hard to diagnose and treat quickly. If left untreated paraduodenal hernia, particularly when complicated by midgut malrotation and volvulus, can lead to severe complications such as intestinal obstruction, blood supply compromise, and even life-threatening bowel strangulation, said Dr Arun Prasad, Consultant, Pediatric Surgeon, Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals
By successfully treating such a rare condition, the team at Dr Mehta’s Hospitals has once again been able to showcase their medical expertise and swift medical intervention in ensuring the best possible outcome for children facing rare and challenging conditions, said Dr Sasidaran, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals
