  • Emergency imposed after coup, more than 9,700 Myanmar people arrive in Mizoram, one Chief Minister, 24 MPs among refugees

     GUWAHATI : In view of the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, Special Envoy of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Christina Schrener Bergener, has appealed to the UN Security Council to take necessary action in Myanmar in time. During a meeting on myanmar issue, he expressed serious concern over the situation there and warned that it may not be delayed. According to him, people in Myanmar are facing a very difficult atmosphere every day. He shared this information at a press conference after the security council’s closed door meeting.

    He said that there was an army coup in Myanmar on 1st February, 2021. Since then, 10,000 people have died in the country and more than 20,000 people have been arrested by the army and security forces. After the military coup in Myanmar, its citizens are coming to India and seeking asylum. According to the United Nations, about 15,000 people are still in custody.His family is not aware of about 5,000 people. About 20,000 refugees have so far taken shelter in other neighbouring countries including India. Briefing the press conference, Christina said that she has appealed to the Security Council to take action in this regard at the earliest, which is very important. He said the situation at the grass root level is becoming uncontrollable.

    The health system in Myanmar has completely collapsed and food security is also under serious threat. Thousands of people are at risk of being starved. The situation may worsen due to the current epidemic. In the Security Council meeting, he appealed to the Military Government of Myanmar to ensure the release of all political prisoners immediately. One Chief Minister is also among the nagirkas. In Chin province, 19,247 people including Chief Minister Salai Lian Lui have taken shelter in Mizoram. A senior police official said, “The Chief Minister of Chin Province crossed the international border and reached Champai city on Monday night. He said 24 MPs of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party National League for Democracy, including Lui, have also taken shelter in different parts of Mizoram. Most of those seeking asylum in the border state are from Chin, known as the ‘Jo’ community. The people of this dynasty share the same lineage, ethnicity and culture as mizo of Mizoram. According to data released by the Crime Investigation Branch of Mizoram Police, at least 9,247 myanmar people are staying in ten districts of the state and the highest number of them is 4156 in Champhai. Assam Rifles sources said that on several occasions, attempts are made by Myanmar nationals to cross the international border continuously. Though many citizens are deported from the borders, some people enter other parts of India by another route. Though they are monitored by the Border Guards, people enter India.Myanmar has been put in place for a year after the army detained President Yu Win Mint and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1. Senior General Min Aung Haling has since been given the command of the country.
