Environment, Forest and Climate change Minister Prakash Javadekar has said that his ministry is supplementing the efforts of the states in abetment of pollution in rivers under National River Conservation Plan, NRCP.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Javadekar said, project proposals are received from the states from time to time for taking up pollution abatement works in towns along various rivers. He said, these proposals are considered for financial assistance under the NRCP.

He said, NRCP, excluding Ganga and its tributaries, has so far covered polluted stretches of 34 rivers in 77 towns spread over 16 states in the country at a sanctioned cost of 5870.54 crore rupees, and central share of 2378 crore rupees has been released to the states for implementation of various pollution abatement schemes.

He said, sewage treatment capacity of 2522.03 million litres per day has been created so far under NRCP resulting in reduction in pollution load being discharged into the rivers.
