Festival of the Jaintias ‘Sngi Lum Lang’ celebrated in Dima Hasao

Haflong  :The Sngi Lum Lang Festival of the Jaintias residing in Dima Hasao district was celebrated at Dimbrucherra playground near Harangajao   with traditional fervour and gaiety on Tuesday.

The festival was celebrated at Dimbrucherra playground near Harangajao   with an aim to revive the culture and customs of the Jaintias living in Dima Hasao.

Amendu Hojai, Executive Member, N C Hills Autonomous Council, graced the occasion as the chief guest and prominent personalities from Haflong and other places joined the celebration.

EM, Hojai in his encouraging speech supported the efforts of the people of Dima Hasao in preserving their own tradition and culture through organizing such festivals.

The festival also signifies the rich cultural heritage and retains the customs and traditions of the Jaintia Community. The 7th of January has been declared as local holiday by the N.C. Hills Autonomous Council for the celebration of Sngi Lumlang festival in 2013.

‘SNGI LUMLANG’ is a significant festival of ‘Jaintia’ or ‘Pnar’ community with an aim to revive culture, customs and tradition of the Jaintia after a long gap of several decades as the festival had been celebrated till 1936 since they embraced the Christianity and some opined that celebration of such festival was wastage of time.

After a long discussion and debates on celebration of the festival with all the Jaintia Gaon Buras of Dima Hasao and active support of the N.C Hills Autonomous Council the festival is being celebrated since 2012.

Traditional dance and other competitions were also organized to give festive gestures.

Bamja (Festival Feast) was also arranged followed by a spectacular cultural programme in the evening keeping all spellbound
