Kochi: An insightful focus group discussion on Kochi Water Metro, held at Jain (Deemed-to-be University) Kochi campus, brought together key stakeholders to discuss the expectations and concerns surrounding the city’s pioneering water transport system. Lokanath Behera, Managing Director of Kochi Metro Rail Ltd, emphasized the critical role of academic institutions in conducting research that supports such initiatives, thereby contributing to nation-building. He pointed out how developed nations often consult academic experts when facing significant societal challenges, such as epidemics. Shri. Behera urged for sustained interest in the Water Metro, advocating for a collaborative effort toward the development of the state and the nation.
The event was part of an ICSSR-funded collaborative research project being conducted by Jain University and Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), focusing on Kochi Water Metro as a sustainable urban transport solution. Jain University is committed to implementing research projects that help create positive changes in society, said Jain University Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. J. Letha, while inaugurating the focus group discussion. The research project jointly conducted by Jain University and CUSAT will have an impact on shaping future transportation models in cities, said Dr. Simmy Kurian, Deputy Director of CMS Business School, Jain University.
Dr. Girish S. Pathi, the project coordinator and Associate Professor at Jain University, presented the social, technical, environmental, and economic aspects of the study in the discussion. The focus group highlighted approaches in overcoming challenges and minimizing the socio-economic and environmental impact of the Water Metro project. Key topics discussed included the nuisance of water hyacinth plants affecting the fishing community, employment opportunities, and the importance of public-private partnerships in promoting sustainable development.
Dr. Monoo John, Head of CMS Business School at Jain University, remarked that continuous collaboration is essential to improve the operational efficiency of the Water Metro system.
