Guwahati : Congress stalwart, former State minister and six-time MLA Gautam Roy and former Congress Rajya Sabha MP Santius Kujur today joined the ruling BJP here. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) secretary and former president of State Youth Congress Hiranya Bhuyan also joined the ruling party during the event held at the State BJP headquarters at Hengrabari. The trio got inducted into the ruling party in the presence of State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass and NEDA convenor and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Speaking on the occasion, Dass said the BJP will be further strengthened in the State following entry in the party of Roy, Kujur and Bhuyan. “They categorically stated that they accepted the ideology and principles of the BJP and want to serve the country and the party without any expectation of rewards,” he said. Dass added that with Roy’s entrance into the BJP, the party’s base will get a boost in the Barak valley, while Kujur’s induction will help the ruling party increase its presence among the members of the tea community. In his speech, Sarma said that all Congress leaders having any base of their own among the masses are joining the BJP one after another. Roy had served six terms in the Assam Legislative Assembly between 1985 and 2016. However, he suffered a defeat from Katlicherra constituency in the 2016 elections. Kujur, whose term as Rajya Sabha ended in June, thanked Dass and Sarma for facilitating his entry into the BJP. It is noteworthy that senior Congress leader Bhubaneswar Kalita joined the BJP earlier this week after resigning from the Rajya Sabha. Three-time MLA from Tinsukia and senior Congress leader Rajendra Prasad Singh also joined the ruling party recently. Later, speaking to the media, Sarma said more leaders from Congress and other parties are expected to cross over to the BJP in the coming months. “The wave will continue till the time of the 2021 Assembly elections,” he said, claiming that Congress leaders and workers are fed up with their own party and are desperate to join the BJP.
