    Government says there is a need for further research in Genetically Modified Crops to rule out any repercussions on health. This was stated by new Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Science Ashwini Kumar.

    Briefing media after assuming charge of his new office today, Mr Kumar said another major challenge is to ensure food security in the country. Emphasising on the need for affordable inputs of agriculture, he said that his ministry is working on developing new varieties of seeds which will help in increasing productivity.

    The Minister also hinted at Government’s efforts to reverse the brain drain in the country and inspire Indians working in leading scientific institutions abroad to come back.

    Stating that research plays a key role in development he said that integrating research in innovation and technology up gradation holds the key to India’s growth in the world forum.

    Mr Kumar also announced that the Government will introduce four new bills in the Budget session of Parliament including Bio technology Regulatory Authority of India Bill 2010, DNA Profiling Bill 2010, Regional Centre for Biotechnology Bill 2010 and Utilisation of Public Funded Intellectual Property Bill 2008.
