Bangalore : With the rising breast cancer cases among younger women, India’s leading digital medical and healthcare solution provider, GenWorks, has launched a new device, Braster Pro, for early detection of the disease. The easy-to-use, radiation-free device that relies on a contact-based screening process can prove to be a game changer for hospitals.

According to the National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research, for every two women diagnosed with breast cancer, one succumbs to it. And one of the leading causes of mortality is late detection. Existing screening methods, such as mammography and sonography, are mostly for older women, as the former is usually done in women aged 50 and above.

Braster Pro uses a technique called liquid crystal thermography. It detects areas of higher temperature in the breast. It helps in the early detection of the disease as tumor development is associated with higher temperatures in the place where the cancer cells are growing. The device looks like a stemless champagne saucer and works by displaying liquid crystal matrix images showing the distribution of temperature in the inner tissues. Those thermographic images are then sent for analysis. The images are analyzed by interpreting and comparing images of both breasts.

Dr Priya Ganesh Kumar, Medical Director, SaiNiwas Health Care & Clinical Advisor, Women’s Health, GenWorks said, “The idea behind breast cancer screening is early detection even in women who don’t show symptoms. Unlike other devices, Braster Pro is contact-based, so it shows more specificity in understanding tumors. If both the breasts are affected, which is very rare, we go for clinical examination, patient’s symptoms, and tissue biopsy.”

“Braster Pro can tell if a tumor is benign or not based on valuations. The liquid crystallography patterns can look similar for inflammation and a tumor. In such cases, we go by the scores given by Braster. If the score is 5 and above, we tell patients they must go for sonography. If the score is between 0 and 2, then it’s benign. A negative report from Braster can reduce a patient’s chance of developing breast cancer by three-fold,” she added.

Observational studies have shown that combining Braster with other screening devices like mammography can increase efficiency by up to 9%.
