  • GEOFFREY BOYCOTT CONDEMNS DHONI’S ANGER ON NEWSX

    Published on February 28, 2011

New Delhi :After the enthralling and scintillating match between India and England held at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday, Geoffrey Boycott has criticized the Indian  Cricket Team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s comments about the contentious leg before decision against English batsman Ian Bell. Post the match Dhoni had commented, “Any kind of adulteration is bad. The adulteration of technology with human thinking was the reason we didn’t get the wicket.”

This was after Yuvraj Singh struck Ian Bell on the pads, and on-field umpire Billy Bowden gave Bell not out. Under the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) which allows teams to question an official’s on-field decision, Dhoni requested for a review. The review confirmed that Bell was out, but the umpires stuck to the original decision. The argument being that the ball struck Bell around 2.5 meters away from the stumps. To this denial Bell went on to make 69 and shared a crucial third-wicket partnership of 170 with Captain Andrew Strauss which resulted in their epic tie with India on Sunday.

To this, Geoffrey Boycott, former England batsman & Captain  who is also on the expert panel of NewsX for the ICC World Cup said: “MS Dhoni didn’t know the rules. The umpires followed the rules and got it dead right. It’s unfortunate it didn’t go India’s way, but the decision was right. I am not saying this because the decision went England’s way. If the ball was hitting middle stump, the decision would have gone India’s way. When they the umpires make a mistake, television can definitely show that it was a mistake. That’s where technology comes in. It’s not there for every marginal decision. Will people get that clearly in their heads? And that goes for Mr. Dhoni and his team.”
